Pourquoi l'acier 316L ne noircit jamais votre peau - Maison Lumélia descriptif

Why 316L Stainless Steel Never Tarnishes Your Skin

A metal designed to last — and for you

You may have already experienced this disappointment: a beloved piece of jewelry that leaves a green or black mark on your skin after a few weeks. This is not inevitable. It's simply a matter of material.

At Maison Lumélia, all our jewelry is made of 316L stainless steel — a medical grade, the same used for surgical implants. And this precision changes everything.

What exactly is 316L steel?

316L steel is an alloy composed mainly of iron, chromium (16-18%), and nickel (10-14%), with a very low carbon content — that's what the "L" stands for: low carbon. This composition creates a natural barrier against oxidation: a thin layer of chromium forms on the surface of the metal and protects it from air, water, and perspiration.

Result: the jewelry does not react on contact with your skin. It does not blacken. It does not rust. It does not tarnish.

Why do other jewelry leave marks?

Classic costume jewelry is often made of brass, zinc, or low-grade alloys, then covered with a thin gold or silver layer. Over time — and especially on contact with perspiration, creams, or water — this plating erodes. The underlying metal oxidizes and reacts with your skin.

316L steel, on the other hand, does not need plating to be beautiful. Its resistance is intrinsic, not superficial.

And what does PVD finishing add?

On some Maison Lumélia pieces, we apply a PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) finish — a vacuum vaporization color deposition technique. This process binds the color (gold, black, rose) directly to the steel surface at a molecular level.

Unlike traditional plating, PVD does not chip and resists daily friction. The color remains true, wear after wear.

Can these jewels be worn in the shower or at sea?

Yes — and that's one of the great advantages of 316L steel. It resists fresh water, salt water, and swimming pool chlorine. You can keep your Maison Lumélia necklace in the shower, at the beach, or while exercising.

A few precautions are still necessary: avoid prolonged contact with perfumes and aggressive chemical products, which can alter the shine in the long term.

A jewel that adapts to your life

316L steel is not a compromise. It's a thoughtful choice for those who want to wear their jewelry without thinking about it — without taking it off before a shower, without putting it away before sports, without fearing the summer heat.

This is Maison Lumélia's promise: an elegance that resists your daily life, as well as the test of time.
