Why we chose 316L steel instead of silver

When we created Maison Lumélia, we made a choice that might seem surprising: not to use silver. Not for lack of ambition — but because we found something better. Here's why 316L stainless steel became the core material of our brand.

Silver: A reputation that hides limitations

Silver has a strong image. It evokes luxury, tradition, and value. But in everyday reality, it presents significant constraints:

• It tarnishes on contact with air, sweat, and certain cosmetic products — a chemical phenomenon called oxidation.
• It scratches easily: pure silver is a soft metal. Even 925 sterling silver remains relatively fragile.
• It triggers allergies in some people, particularly due to the copper it contains in its alloy.
• It requires regular maintenance: polishing, airtight storage, avoiding humidity.

For jewelry designed to be worn every day, these constraints are prohibitive.

316L Steel: The material for demanding everyday use

316L stainless steel is used in medical surgery, the food industry, and high-end watchmaking. This is no coincidence: it is one of the most stable and safest metals available.

Its concrete advantages:

• Hypoallergenic: nickel-free, lead-free, cadmium-free. Ideal for sensitive skin.
• Corrosion-resistant: it does not tarnish, rust, or oxidize on contact with water or sweat.
• Durable: its hardness makes it much more scratch-resistant than silver.
• Stable over time: a 316L steel piece of jewelry retains its original appearance years after purchase, without special maintenance.

And PVD in all of this?

PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) is the process we use to apply gold, rose gold, or black finishes to our steel jewelry. It is a high-precision industrial technique: a thin layer of metal is deposited onto the steel in a vacuum chamber, at very high temperatures.

The result: a uniform, extremely adherent color, which resists time much better than a simple classic electroplating. This is what allows us to offer gold-plated jewelry that doesn't fade after a few weeks.

An ethical choice too

316L steel is also a more responsible choice. It is 100% recyclable, its production has less impact than that of mined silver, and its long lifespan reduces the need for frequent replacement.

At Maison Lumélia, we believe that lasting quality is the most honest form of accessible luxury. 316L steel embodies this philosophy exactly.
