PVD: How to get that long-lasting color

PVD: What exactly is it?

PVD stands for Physical Vapor Deposition. It's a high-precision industrial process used in aerospace, medicine, luxury watchmaking — and in recent years, contemporary jewelry.

The principle: In a vacuum chamber, at very high temperatures, metal atoms (gold, titanium, black steel, etc.) are vaporized and deposited in an ultra-thin layer on the surface of the jewelry. This layer literally integrates with the surface of the steel — it doesn't just sit on top like a varnish; it molecularly bonds to it.

Why is it better than traditional plating?

Traditional galvanic plating — used on most costume jewelry — deposits a layer of metal by electrolysis. It's fast, inexpensive, but the layer is fragile: it wears away, chips, and eventually disappears, often within weeks or months depending on use.

PVD, on the other hand, creates a much stronger bond. The deposited layer is:

• More adherent: bonded to the surface at an atomic level
• More uniform: consistent thickness across the entire surface, even in nooks and crannies
• More resistant: to scratches, moisture, perspiration, UV rays
• Safer: no toxic chemicals used in the process

What colors can be achieved?

PVD allows for a wide range of finishes:
